As these cracks open, oxidation ingress increases, leading to premature failure of the material due to increased bonding between the fiber and matrix. The addition of the EBC demonstrated a significant reduction in oxidation, which allowed for fiber/matrix debonding and subsequently longer creep life. The exposed backside surfaces of the EBC coated specimens appeared to be the main source of oxidation ingress due to an increased tensile stress state (under thermal gradient conditions) and exposure to the environment.
